# About James Okafor

James Okafor has been writing about live rock, metal and electronic music since 2013, starting as a freelance reviewer for the British metal magazine Terrorizer and later contributing to Metal Hammer, Loud and Quiet and Resident Advisor. He joined Goall Concerts as Senior Music Editor in 2025 to lead coverage of the European festival circuit and the global metal scene.

He has covered more than 300 shows in person across 21 countries, from sold-out arena tours by Metallica and Tool to 50-capacity hardcore basement shows in Berlin. His byline regularly appears in long-form festival recaps for Metal Hammer and tour autopsies for Loud and Quiet.

James is fluent in English and German, with conversational French and reading Italian. He studied Live Sound Engineering at SAE Institute London (2012) before moving into journalism — a background that informs his analyses of venue acoustics and stage production.

Areas of expertise

  • Heavy metal and hardcore: covered the genre across 21 countries since 2013. Annual presence at Wacken, Hellfest, Copenhell, Brutal Assault and Damnation Festival.
  • European festival circuit: institutional knowledge of Rock am Ring, Glastonbury logistics, Roskilde sustainability practices and Primavera Sound's electronic stages.
  • Electronic music venues: deep familiarity with Berlin's Berghain, Salzburg's Pratersauna, Amsterdam's De School (RIP), Tbilisi's Bassiani.
  • Stage production: capable of breaking down why a particular show worked or failed at the technical level.

Recent featured work

  • "The Last Year of Metallica's M72: Tracking the End of the Two-Night, No-Repeats Era" (Metal Hammer)
  • "Why Hellfest Outgrew Its Site, and What That Means for Cleansup 2026" (Loud and Quiet)
  • "Berghain's Quiet Year: How Berlin's Most Famous Club Adapted to 2024" (Resident Advisor)

How James sources

Every tour date James covers is verified against the official artist or promoter channel, the venue's own publication, and a primary ticket marketplace. For metal subgenre claims (e.g., "first crossover-thrash band to play X venue"), he checks the venue's own gig history and confirms with at least one other journalist who covered the scene at the time. He attends the shows he reviews; he labels any unattended coverage explicitly.
